Fabric Heaven!

I awoke the other day to this email from my mom (sorry it's fuzzy)...note the subject line, haha:

Yes it's true!!!!  What all of us Canadians have been looking forward to!  Joann Fabric and Craft Stores are now shipping to Canada!  I have looked longingly at fabric on their website for so long, and have been in awe of the amazing prices.  I don't know what the shipping and duty costs are, but at least we now have another option for fabric!  Here are three of my favourites, after just a few minutes of browsing.

Waverly Modern Essentials Fabric-Groovy Grill / Spa

Better Homes & Gardens Serenity Aires Natural

Yup, fabric heaven!

Shower Curtain Makeover

The bathroom is coming along so well, I'm super pumped about how it's looking.  The mirror has been removed (so in the meantime I'm having to use my bedroom mirror for getting ready every morning!), the room has been painted, and now the shower curtain has had its makeover!  He received some extensions!

This is what the shower curtain looked like when I purchased it.

I love it for its waffly texture, the fact that it has a mesh area at the top to let extra light in, and, the liner is removable for easy washing.  The huge downside...it is WAY too short!  The rod is placed so high that the standard height of the curtain just isn't cutting it.  Plus, I am always nervous water is going to escape.

I loved the bird fabric my mom used as pillows on her bed, so luckily she said yes when I asked if I could borrow a strip for the bottom of the curtain.

Here's the shower curtain now!

Now I can scratch another thing off the good ol' bathroom to-do list!
  • Add a piece of fabric to the bottom of my shower curtain (notice how short it looks? Everything in my bathroom was made for a very tall person...)
  • Update the shower head (again, it is mounted so high that by the time the water reaches my head, only the ends of my hair get wet!)
  • Update the light fixture
  • Change out the mirror
  • Add some closed storage
  • Add towel hooks
  • Add some open shelving over the toilet
  • Paint
I love a little bit of coloured pattern in a bathroom!  How about you?

DIY Drop Cloth Curtains

My living room window is huge and faces the road, so I knew that I was going to need curtains or blinds to close at night (no one likes being a fish in a fish bowl!)  The only problem was, the patio door is flanked by two windows, and when combined, they are essentially an entire wall.  Here's one side...picture another window on the other side of the door.

I had no idea how I was going to cover 10.5 feet of window.  I thought about doing 4 panels of curtains, one on each frame - two on the outside and two for the door, like the model home.  Sorry the picture is so dark but just to give an idea...

But I really didn't like the idea of having curtains in the centre, or having the light blocked by excess fabric.

I couldn't find any curtains in store that were big enough to just have two panels on the outside.  I also knew that buying enough fabric cover the windows was going to be WAY too expensive to try to do on my own.  Then I remembered I had read something somewhere at some point in time, about using drop cloths as fabric.  They're a neutral colour, they aren't too expensive, and they're big.  So I headed over to the hardware store and picked up one of these bad boys.

I also ordered a yard of the Soho - Kiwi fabric from Tonic Living to use as strips of pattern on the cloth.  It's more green than the sample appears here.

Outdoor - Soho, Kiwi

Then, it's just like you are making regular curtains!  You spread the drop cloth out, and cut it in half.  Then the two side strips of the fabric were sewn to the sides.

I love grommet curtains, so I picked up a few do-it-yourself grommet packs at Fabricland.  Basically, you measure how far apart you want the grommets to be, trace and cut out the hole provided in the kit, then the two pieces of the grommet snap together.  It's a little more complicated than that though since you have to take into account seam allowances and how high the curtains will hang off the ground.  Here's a handy link that we used by Joann Fabric that sure saved the day!  You can find it here.

You always need to use an even number of grommets, otherwise your curtains won't hang properly.

And here's the finished product!

I love that I only need two panels to cover the whole window!  And best of all, these huge curtains cost less than $60!  I didn't wash the drop cloth prior to working with it since I couldn't afford for it to shrink.  I needed its maximum length.  But you could definitely wash it before hand which might help take out some of the stiffness of the cotton canvas.

Now I can't wait to paint the walls so everything doesn't look so beige!

Long Weekend Lounging

I just loves me a long weekend.  It would also appear that being away from work for 4 days makes me incapable of using proper grammar as well.  But I digress...

This weekend was awesome since I didn't have to be anywhere, work, etc. so I got to just sit back and relax.  The weather was AMAZING!!  The crocuses (croci?) have come and gone, but the grape hyacinths are starting to come in!

My sister came over on Saturday and stayed for the weekend.  She got an ice cream maker for her birthday so we knew we had to try it out!  It took a bit of figuring out (we didn't have the bucket cold enough at first) but it turned out great and was delicious!  You can find the recipe for the mint chocolate variety we made here.  We left out the spinach and added food colouring instead.  Also added WAY more mint extract to make it minty enough (3-4 times more!) and used honey to sweeten.  I highly recommend it!

Sunday was gorgeous outside.  I pulled out the patio chair and read on the deck while our turkey was cooking.  I even got a slight sunburn!  All this while my poor Maritime friends were getting a snow storm...Sorry guys!

Our Easter dinner was great.  My third time cooking Easter dinner was a success!  One of my sister's friends joined us and we had a nice evening filled with food, wine, and hot tubbing!  (This is a picture of last year's dinner.  I didn't get a photo of this year...but suffice it to say it looked pretty much the same!)

Also, I got some fabric samples in from Tonic Living!!  So exciting!!!  I've been looking for some fabric to convert an old coffee table into an ottoman (I'm loving the solid brown one below), and a fabric to use as a border for my idea of making curtains out of drop cloths (also loving the green sort of checkerd one.  It looks tan, but it's actually a pale green.).  I'll keep you posted!  I really liked the pink pattern to make some bolster pillows for my den (since I thought it would go great with my Electric Blue paint colour), but I'm not sure if I'm loving the cream lines...I was hoping they would be white.  I'm on the fence if I should hold out for a pink and white colour combo or if this would look good.  I'm thinking I may keep looking.  Thoughts?

What were you all up to this past weekend?  Perhaps you spent it shovelling snow or basking in the sun?  Any good projects you're working on or was it a weekend of relaxing?  Try any new recipes?  I'd love to hear!

My Favourite Pillows (and a Dog Bed!)

Remember that fabric I bought a while ago?  Well, I finally put it all to good use and made some new pillows!  I must confess, I did not do the sewing.  I am a mean "sew-by-hand" sewer, but put me in front of a sewing machine and I have no idea what I'm doing.  So in reality, I designed the pillows (and did the research on how to sew button holes!) and my mom did the actual sewing.  Learning how to use a sewing machine is on my to-do list for sure!

I love the owls so much!  And the best part is the other side:

I bought the buttons at Michaels, and after practice sewing about 20 button holes, it turned out so great!  I bought all of my pillow inserts at IKEA.

We made 2 of these for either end of my couch.

I did not make this pillow...I bought it.  But the green matched so well that I couldn't pass it up!

This is perhaps the best find EVER.  Remember that super cute, flannel giraffe fabric that I loved?  Well, they didn't ship to Canada.  So one day I was in Winners and found the next best thing - a dog bed!  It's tufted, and sooo soft and fleecy (not to mention amazingly cheap too).  It will be perfect to curl up with in a chair!

I'm kind of loving this making pillows thing.  All of them (except the dog bed) have the ability to remove the insert so the cover can be washed.  The ones we made have a simple flap and/or buttons, and the green one I bought has a zipper.

I'm on the lookout for some new fabric to do a few more for my den/office/spare room!

Fabric Fabric Fabric

I'm on a bit of a fabric kick lately.  Probably because I'm still on vacation and it's cold outside, so I spend most of my time cruising sites online looking at awesome designs!  My personal favourites are Designer Fabrics (they are based in Toronto which is great, since finding Canadian fabric suppliers online is quite tough.  While they have reasonable prices, I'm always looking for more of a steal than they offer!), Fabric.com and Joann Fabrics.  The latter two have AMAZING prices, but the shipping charges at Fabric.com sometimes aren't worth it, and Joann doesn't ship to Canada!  Boo.  BUT!!! In my searching last night, I discovered there is a Joann Fabric in Ogdensburg, NY, which is only an hour away!  I could make a total day of fabric shopping... I forsee a trip in the spring once the weather gets better!  Here's some that I've already purchased for some projects :)

(Joann Fabric - I was going to have this shipped to my friend's parent's house in South Carolina, but ended up finding an interesting replacement instead, I'll reveal it soon!)

(Rockland Textiles - fabric store in Ottawa)

I just think the owls are so cute!  And the giraffe fabric is actually a nursery fabric, and is a soft flannel.  It's perfect for me, since I have a great love of giraffes!  The black lines on the green fabric are flocked, so they give the material a nice textured look.  I have already started using all of these for some toss cushions - I'll be sure to show them off when they are done!
